This book sneaked in when I wasn't looking a couple of weeks ago. That's what I get for taking some vacation time. I really wish I had this while on the shores of the Bay of Fundy. While the boys(include Hubby ) were walking on the sea floor at low tide, I think I might have been sitting with a beverage of choice in one hand and this book in the other.

By now I am pretty sure every quilter has a Clearview Triangle ( 8",10, or 12") in their stash of rulers. As much as everyone says that they have a stash of fabrics, I think the time has come to own up to all of the rulers they have hanging around their sewing rooms!!!

Where did the Time Go?

It's hard to believe that Summer has finally ended. Our Open House in August was an absolute blast! It was so nice to see our customers. As soon as the Open House was over, I left on a two week down east vacation with my Hubby and 2 sons. And believe it or not, I actually visited few quilt shops!!!! We spent some amazing time on the Bay of Fundy and in Halifax. Both my boys have decided that Halifax is the place to go to school.

As soon as I got back to work, it has just been crazy! Lots of new products!!!! Anyways back to work. Over the next few weeks, there shall be lots of postings of new products especially great gift items for Christmas.

Making Ironing Fun...

Ironing fun? Okay maybe not but boy can we make it smell nice! A new scent has been introduced at Spring Market. Linen Fresh comes in 3 sizes...473 ml, 32 oz and 1 gallon. We are seeing a real trend these days. Once a customer has found their most favorite scent, they are purchasing gallons instead of the smaller bottles. That definitely cuts down on the plastic going into landfill.

Other scents available include Scent-Free, Carribean Beach, Citrus Grove, Lavender, Tea Rose and Cherry Blossom.

My Two Cents on A Very Hot Day

I'm sure we've all had that customer service experience where the "experience" left a little to be desired. Mine happened a few weeks ago and it got me thinking and really drove home a valuable lesson to remember.

Having a customer is a privlege not a right. How do we earn our customers? Simple, by offering good product and good service. And above all treat your customers as you would like to be treated. If you mess up, be honest and say so and figure out together a solution that will make all happy.

After all it is the customer walking through the door that keeps your doors open.

And by the way, although my local bookstore did not carry this book, they went out of their way to make sure I got what I needed. Thanks Kate, that's why I keep coming back.

After much anticipation, Nancy Halvorsen's new Christmas book has arrived. To be perfectly honest with you, we sold out of our first shipment. More are on order.

My point in the posting is to let you know that Nancy has once again used great product from Ackfeld Wiring(wire hangers), Indo-US Sales (towels), and buttons and of course her fabrics. All of these aid in making the finished project a beautiful piece of work. So if you are a shop, make sure you have a great selection of the product for your customers to choose from. One of Maple Island's Newest Patterns

If you noticed on my previous posting, Maple Island Quilts had a number of patterns on the top-selling list. I thoroughly enjoy sewing Debbie's patterns. The one pictured in this blog posting is one of Debbie's newest ones that I am dying to sew. Anybody got some time they can lend me?

It's a great stash buster quilt but with a twist. The dark triangles and the border do require some yardage. They are the "repeating" fabric. So, if you have customers wanting to use up some of their stash why not suggest this great pattern. Four sizes are included.

Garden Song by Art to Heart won the title of Top-Selling Book for the first half of this year. Any surprise? Absolutely not!

First, it is an Art to Heart Book. Second, the way Nancy Halvorsen designs she has all bases covered. From fabric, to tea towels, to wirehangers, to buttons. Talk about giving the whole package!!!

Very shortly, we will have Nancy's new Christmas book. Like Garden Song, we will carry the tea-towels by Indo-US, the wire from Ackfeld Wire and as a bonus the lovely red buttons that appear on two of the wallhangings.

Isaac's Treasure Book

When Isaac was a little boy, he got a Curious George Story Book from his Aunt Cheryl. Every night we had to read about George and the Man with the Yellow Hat. I think both Hubby and I could recite the stories off by heart!

When I saw this pattern from Indygo Junction, I immediately thought of Curious George. It was a walk down memory lane. Made with either yo-yos or from fabric, it's going to be absolutely adoreable. Although Isaac is almost sixteen and 6 foot 3, I'm thinking of making a monkey for his birthday in June.

Who knows maybe that book will come out once again.

Anyways, I finally got my hands on a copy and I am just itching to make a few of the 23 projects included. There are lap size quilts, tablerunners and placemats projects all included in this book. Talk about bang for your buck!

Easy straight line piecing means no tricky measurements or stretchy bias edges.

Oh-oh! Janet is going to be upset with me!!! I didn't tell her I was putting this on the Blog. Sometimes ideas come to me at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. Sound familiar?

Anyways, I made a quilt from this last year. I used a beautiful scenic Japanese print in reds, blacks and greens. And by the way I made the larger one. Boy was it every beautiful! Easy to follow instructions made it a breeze to make.

I've have a number of shops hooked on this pattern. It makes a great class. It makes great kits.

Easy Japanese Quilt Style

I have to be very honest, I am normally not a fan of Japanese style fabrics...up until now. When the sample copy of this book arrived in our office, I picked it up and fell in love. There are 10 projects included in this book (throws, table mats and runners and a Geisha Doll).

My most favorite quilt is the "Tsukiyama" Bed Quilt. The blocks are done out of a variety of Japanese style prints with a green sashing becoming the path that meanders in the garden. It truly has a feel of watercolor this project. When I get a chance, I think this might be a great project. The prints do not have to match each other. The garden path fabric is what ties everything together.

By now many of you have seen the advertisement ( or may even carry) McKenna's new Block of the Month - Back On the Farm. We had a chance to catch up in Pittsburgh this past month and I snapped a pictureof Mckenna by the quilt. Sales are quite strong for this new block of the month. As I look at each block, I remember something funny from my years growing up on my parent's farm. Life was sure interesting back then!!!

Meet Shelly Stokes of Cedar Canyon Textiles

Paint has always fascinated me, but when it comes to painting I have two left feet! QuiltSource Canada and Cedar Canyon Textiles hooked up earlier this year. We carry the Paintstiks, books, patterns, brushes as well as the rubbing plates. It's great fun because you can create your own fabric to use in projects in a few easy steps.

Recently a shop in Ontario promoted us to do samples. Debbie (our resident painter)and I worked together to create samples incorporating the artwork and a variety of patterns to show what you can do. These samples will be available for shopowners to borrow. If your interested in borrowing our samples give us a call.

Why not consider doing a class on the Paintstiks this coming Fall? Lots of fun and relatively easy to do.

By the way that's Shelly standing in front of the new ConeFlower pattern. Absolutely beautiful.

While in Pittsburgh recently, I got a chance to catch up with Edyta Star of Laundry Basket Quilts. Edyta has been successful publishing her own patterns for a few years now. Recently, Edyta has been dabbling in fabric design and is now a full-fledge book author. Her newest book, Hop To It - Appliqued Blocks & Projects has been published by Landauer Corporation. It is a beautiful book with 8 projects. Look for Edyta's new calendar later this year.

Cottage Reading

This past weekend, I got to spend three glorious days at a beautiful cottage in the Haliburtons with 7 other women. The weather was great, the food was wonderful and the company was fantastic.
On Thursday evening I forgot to pick-up a book at the bookstore to read so

when I rushed in on Friday morning to finish up a few projects, I grabbed this book off our shelves. All the short stories were one or two pages long. I really enjoyed reading them. Just the perfect size. Over the weekend, I had a number of my friends grab the book to take a look at it. I think my copy is going to do the rounds this summer.

Something For Teens & Tweens

Although this is a new release from C&T Publishing, I didn't want to group it with the other books in yesterday's blog entry because I wanted to really talk about this book. I applaud C&T for publishing a book just for teens and tweens. As "seasoned" sewers and quilters we sometimes forget that we need to find appropriate projects for that age group.

This great book is written by Sara Tral ( a teen herself). Nine projects including PJ's, a totebag, a cell phone cover, MP3 cover, an apron, and a notebook cover are nicely presented. With lots of tips and journal entries included, I think any teen or tween will enjoy this book.

Working With Flannel

I know it seems ironic, but the best selection of flannels normally shows up in the shops in the summertime. Not every quilt pattern out there lends itself to flannels. I've personally used Terri Atkinson's Yellow Brick Road, FriendFolks' Turning Twenty as my two favorite patterns for working with flannel.

Next time I sew a flannel quilt, I'm going to use Quick Cozy Couch Quilts as my pattern of choice. I'll have 6 patterns to choose from. I like the one on the front cover. Broken down, it's a nine patch and a strip block. Use the Strip Tube Ruler to make the strip blocks. Easy as 1-2-3!

It's Not A Question of A Million Dollars...

It's a question of time!!! Dwight and I had a great Pittsburgh Market. We both got home and have been running non-stop getting everyday stuff done and finalizing new product additions. Throw in there a batting truck and family commitments and that just about covers the last few weeks. In order to get everything that we found at market on the Blog as well as new product that arrived in the last couple of weeks, I am going to back-date some of my postings so I can get everything on.

Memories of Days Gone By...

Not too long ago, my youngest son Quinn asked what it was like growing up on a farm. I began to think alot about the changes in lifestyle in just a generation. For my generation, it was lazy days (after chores of course) exploring, bike riding and just having fun. Today's younger generation is so involved in organized sports, have electronic gadgets galore and quite frequently say the phrase " I'm bored". We NEVER said that one to our parents! It meant that Mom or Dad would find us something to do...

Back on topic...

When I saw McKenna Ryan's new Block of the Month it brought back memories of my childhood. I think I may have to do at least one or two of these blocks. Thanks for the trip down memory lane McKenna!

Hot Off the Press from Martingale & Company

Although I love to try projects that are out of my comfort zone, my first love is definitely leaning towards the country/folk art side of things. I've been watching many books coming through our doors that are taking the country/folk art style and bringing it into today's whelm of colours. I'm in love with Folk-Art Favorites! Having boys means I tend not to have alot of "flowery" quilts in my house. I am drawn to the quilt on the front cover of this book. I think I can sneak this one into the house without the "AH, Mom!" being heard through the valley. I'll let you know how I fair...

Let Them Eat Cake!

With the terms "jelly-rolls", "honey-buns" and "layer cakes" floating around quilt shops these days, any innocent passerby may think that quilt shops are now selling baked goods!! But we know better...

Cozy Quilt Designs has produced patterns and a book(pictured) that will give you the recipes to use Layer Cakes. For those of you who are unsure a layer cake is a 10" square. Some fabric companies produce them, but there is no reason why you cannot create your own.

As an added benefit, Cozy Quilt Designs has a 10" ruler that makes baking(oops, I mean sewing )a breeze.
